Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Altar and Rosary Society

Mission Statement

The Altar and Rosary Society of the Cathedral of the  Immaculate Conception  in Memphis, Tenn., under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, wishes to serve God and His Church. We strive for personal sanctification, promote true love of God and neighbor, encourage and support Catholic family life, display Christian Charity to one another, and foster reverence for the Holy House of God.  As Mary lovingly tended to the Holy Family’s home in Nazareth, our members have a desire to serve and honor God by helping to maintain and beautify the Lord’s house.

We will labor for its proper adornment, caring for the altar, with its fine linens, candles, and flowers, the sanctuary, both its sacristies, and the entire body of the church, enhancing an atmosphere for divine worship.  While working together in Christ, we will also provide various parish receptions and render assistance to the parish priests whenever necessary.

WHAT IS THE ALTAR AND ROSARY SOCIETY

The primary purpose of the Altar & Rosary Society is the glory of God, in the example and imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by serving the people of the parish. Particularly, as its name states:
  • ALTAR - by imitating Our Blessed Mother in the service of her Divine Son, by keeping His house, the church, and all that surrounds Him, a place worthy of His Real Presence, and that of His children.
  • ROSARY - by honoring and praising the Blessed Virgin Mary, in a particular way through the recitation and promotion of the Most Holy Rosary in common, in the family, and privately.
  • SOCIETY - by keeping an eye open for the needs of the parish and then seeking to fulfill that need in humble, joyful service.

History

Historically, the Altar & Rosary Society movement in American Catholic parishes grew out of two older organizations: the Sodality of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, and the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary . In the words of Church historian Raymond J. Miller, C.Ss.R., the A&R is "the collective women's organization in the parish; it stands ready to hand for whatever organized service the ladies can render to the parish." Our desire is to serve! Poder es servir!

Membership and Duties

The Altar Society is open to any woman of the parish who wishes to participate in the carrying out of this mission.  There are several committees that work together in order to enhance an atmosphere worthy of “divine worship.”  Volunteers are always gladly welcomed to help perform various tasks on the following committees:

  • Church Cleaning
  • Sanctuary/Sacristy Cleaning
  • Candles
  • Linens (purificators, corporals, surplices, etc.)
  • Flower/Seasonal Decor
  • Parish Receptions (when needed)
  • Care of live plants and greenery
  • Emptying, cleaning, and refilling the 5 holy water fonts

Meetings

The fourth Saturday of the month beginning at 10am from September through June.  The regular duties continue year round.

A rosary is prayed prior to each meeting at 10am in the Church for the intentions of the women of the parish. The meetings gather women of the parish together for a day of social interaction, a light lunch, and a time for business of the Altar Society to be discussed. Meetings are hosted by members of the group and announcements in the bulletin and the website will reveal the theme or social activity.

Fundraisers

Christmas Bazaar, Fall Festival, Christmas fudge sales, helps to fund the purchase of new altar linens, etc. (Members will vote on what the fundraiser would be for the upcoming year).

We are a group of women who support one another in time of need. We all have one thing in common and that is our love for our Blessed Mother and our Church and a willing heart to assist when and where we are needed. We invite and urge all the women in our Parish to join us at our meetings and discover ways to be involved in this important and rewarding ministry.  We need lots of help!  You will find that it is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners, contribute to the Parish, grow in spirituality and to have a joyful time doing so!

Our first meeting will be September 24th at 10am in the Church.  A light lunch will be served in Marian Hall.  Looking forward to a fun, prayerful, and fulfilling year!
